Fuvahmulah, the Tiger Shark Capital of the world, is an undeniable magnet for divers. When the peak season hits (generally December to May), it draws a surge of international visitors. Above all, the thrill of guaranteed pelagic encounters, such as hammerheads and thresher sharks to oceanic mantas, becomes too tempting.

This increase in traffic, however, adds layers of complexity and risk to an already challenging diving environment. That is why choosing a reputable, safety-focused dive center like Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah is important. It is not just about convenience; it is absolutely crucial for a safe, ethical, and quality experience.

Dive Safe, Dive With Purpose, Dive With Locals

Safety in Overcrowded Waters

The signature Tiger Shark Harbour is a shallow, unique site that operates on an organized schedule managed by local centers. During the busy season, this site can see its maximum capacity tested.

Small Ratios are Non-Negotiable: A reputable center, strictly maintains a small guide-to-guest ratio of one guide to every four divers. When boats are full, less reputable operators might push their limits. Sacrificing safety by not giving each dive, diver, or conditions the attention that is necessary. Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah’s commitment to a 1:4 guide to guest ratio, along with a boat capacity of 12 divers, ensures every diver receives personalized attention. Keeping to safety standards is critical when sharing the water with multiple apex predators.

Expert Navigation of the Currents: Powerful, open-ocean currents define Fuvahmulah’s diving scene. Peak season doesn’t tame them. Local experts, like the team at Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, are intimately familiar with the daily fluctuations and unique currents. Consequently, this local knowledge and experience is the difference between a thrilling drift dive and a dangerous, uncontrolled one.

Maintaining Ethical Encounters

The high volume of divers during peak season puts greater pressure on the local marine life. Though protocols aim to protect it, some dive operators may choose to ignore circumstances. Our approach to shark diving balances incredible diver experiences with long-term protection of the tiger shark population.

Responsible, Conservation-Focused Protocols: The best operators are conservation advocates first. Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah is 100% locally-owned. Our commitment to the health of the reef and the tiger shark population is a long-term economic and ethical priority. We adhere to strict, minimal feeding protocols and prioritize education, ensuring the sharks remain curious and undisturbed.

Education and Knowledge Sharing: To be a responsible diver is to be an educated diver. We believe that ethical encounters start with understanding, not just observing. For that reason, we focus heavily on educating and sharing knowledge with every client. Before you even enter the water, you will attend our mandatory tiger shark dive safety briefing. This session covers:

Tiger shark biology and behavior.

The critical role of sharks in maintaining ocean health.

The established signaling and handling techniques used by our dive masters.

The strict code of conduct for diver-shark interaction.

By sharing this knowledge, we ensure every participant respects the animals’ space and contributes positively to the encounter, transforming a simple dive into an act of conservation awareness.

Dedicated Time Slots & Site Integrity: To prevent overcrowding at Tiger Harbour, specific time slots are assigned to each dive center. It is important to realize that a reputable center will respect this schedule rigorously. This ensures it is only your group at the site, optimizing both safety and the quality of your encounter. This regulated approach minimizes stress on the marine environment and guarantees a premium, focused experience for our divers.

Fuvahmulah Shark Diving Regulations

Shark Diving Regulations: Strict shark diving regulations have been strategically and collaboratively developed with local marine biologists and government agencies. These regulations aim to:

Ensure diver safety by maintaining predictable boundaries.

Protect the natural behavior of the sharks by limiting intrusion.

Preserve the integrity of the dive site and its ecosystem for generations to come.

Adherence to these rules is non-negotiable and is the key to providing sustainable, high-quality, and ethical tiger shark diving experiences.

The Pelagic Difference: What Sets Us Apart

While many dive centers offer shark encounters, Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah provides an experience rooted in authentic expertise, local commitment, and an uncompromising ethical standard. We don’t just take you diving—we immerse you in a world of responsible marine exploration.

100% Locally-Owned and Operated: Unlike international operators that may prioritize profit over local sustainability, Maldivians fully own Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah. This means our long-term success depends intrinsically to the health of the local ecosystem. Our dive masters grew up around these waters understanding the subtle cues of the currents. Transient guides cannot match this life-long knowledge.

Prioritizing Education Over Entertainment: We focus on transforming divers into informed ocean advocates. Our educational sessions ensure divers approach the dives with respect and understanding, making the encounter deeper than just a photo opportunity.

Strategic Ethical Collaboration: Our operational ethics are not self-imposed. They are externally validated. Our strict protocols were developed in collaboration with local marine biologists and conservation agencies. This warrants your diving under the regional gold standard for sustainable and ethical shark tourism.

Quality, Not Compromise, Especially During Peak Demand

During the busiest times, booking last-minute or choosing the cheapest option can often lead to a diluted experience.

Better Gear & Logistics: High-volume traffic means more wear and tear on equipment. Reputable centers invest heavily in maintaining and upgrading their gear. Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah’s well-organized operation ensures your focus remains on the incredible marine life, not malfunctioning equipment.

The Best Guides for the Job: Busy seasons require experienced hands. The team at Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah are highly experienced with familiarity of shark diving safety standards. Subsequently, you are certain that your dives are led by a team with a perfect safety record.

The Bottom Line

Fuvahmulah offers a dive experience unlike any other on Earth. When you travel to this remote, pelagic paradise, especially during the high-traffic season, your peace of mind, and your safety, is directly tied to the experience and professionalism of your dive center.

By choosing a dedicated, ethical, and award-winning local expert like Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, you ensure your bucket-list encounter with the tiger sharks is as safe and responsible as it is unforgettable.

The Maldivian atoll of Fuvahmulah is not just a dive spot—it’s a global phenomenon. It is the undisputed capital for tiger shark diving in the Maldives. Fuvahmulah offers reliable, year-round encounters with these magnificent apex predators.

Locally known as femunu miyaru, the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is among the ocean’s most recognizable and powerful requiem sharks. These giants earn their name from the distinctive dark vertical stripes and spots visible on juveniles. These markings gradually fade as they mature into massive adults. Some individuals reaches up to 5 meters (16 feet) in length and weighing nearly 900 kilograms (2,000 lbs). Their broad heads and serrated, slicing teeth are instantly recognizable and perfectly adapted to their diverse diet.

Why Fuvahmulah is the World’s Best Destination for Tiger Shark Diving

Tiger sharks can be spotted across the Maldivian archipelago. Fuvahmulah holds the unique distinction as the only place in the Maldives where divers are guaranteed tiger shark encounters.

This unparalleled reliability is due to the island’s extraordinary, one-of-a-kind geography:

Isolated Pinpoint: Fuvahmulah is a solitary atoll with no nearby land masses.

Pelagic Magnet: This isolation creates powerful oceanic currents that sweep past the island, bringing a constant stream of nutrient-rich water.

Natural Hub: The currents are a major oceanic transit hub, functioning as a nursery ground, cleaning station, and feeding station. Resulting in schools of tuna and oceanic manta rays to the island’s most famous and impressive residents: the tiger sharks.

To date, local dive operators and researchers have successfully identified 300 individual tiger sharks. Thus, cementing Fuvahmulah’s status as the world’s most reliable destination for tiger shark diving.

The Ecological Power of the Tiger Shark

Tiger sharks have earned the nickname “garbage bins of the ocean” due to their famously diverse and opportunistic diet. They will consume nearly anything they find, including fish, turtles, marine mammals, seabirds, crustaceans, cephalopods, mollusks, and even carrion. This insatiable, all-encompassing feeding behavior is even reflected in their local Dhivehi name, femunu.

Despite this reputation, tiger sharks play a crucial and vital ecological role. By consuming the sick, weak, or dead animals, they act as the ocean’s cleanup crew. This process helps regulate prey populations and prevents the spread of disease. It also keeps the entire marine ecosystem robust and in perfect balance.

Fuvahmulah Shark Diving with Awe: Shifting Fear into Fascination

For divers seeking the ultimate bucket-list experience, tiger shark diving in Fuvahmulah is truly unlike anywhere else on Earth.

These up-close encounters consistently shift a diver’s perspective, transforming deeply-rooted fear into profound fascination and respect. Far from the sensationalized “man-eater” stereotype, tiger sharks are curious, intelligent, and absolutely essential to the health of our oceans.

By choosing to dive responsibly, you not only experience the sheer thrill of being face-to-face with an apex predator but also become an active supporter of the critical conservation message: these sharks deserve protection, not fear.

Dive Qualifications: Ready for the Tiger?

Minimum Requirement: Reputable dive centers, including Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, requires you to hold a minimum Open Water Diver certification. This allows you to dive to the standard recreational limit of 18 meters (60 feet), which is sufficient for the tiger shark dive site.

Recommended Certification: An Advanced Open Water Diver certification is strongly recommended for diving in Fuvahmulah. This qualification allows you to dive up to 30 meters (100 feet). This added depth limit is advantageous for several reasons:

It gives you access to deeper pinnacles and cleaning stations where you have better chances of spotting other incredible pelagic life, such as thresher sharks, whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, oceanic manta rays, mola mola, etc. which often inhabit depths beyond 18 meters.

It provides a greater margin of safety and comfort when conducting dives in strong currents, which are a defining feature of Fuvahmulah’s unique geography.

Choosing the Right Dive Center: Why Reputation Matters

Your choice of dive center is arguably the most critical decision for a safe, ethical, and unforgettable tiger shark diving experience. A dive center like Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah exemplifies the qualities you should look for:

1. Safety and Experience

Dive centers that specialize in shark diving must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to safety.

Proven Track Record: Look for operators with years of experience, specifically in the Fuvahmulah currents and with the tiger shark population.

Expert Guides: Guides must be highly trained, possessing deep knowledge of shark biology and behavior, current reading, and emergency procedures. They should ensure divers maintain a respectful distance and a calm presence.

Equipment Quality: The center must use well-maintained, modern diving and safety equipment.

2. Ethical and Sustainable Practices

The growing popularity of tiger shark diving requires operators to prioritize the welfare of the animals and the health of the reef.

Responsible Feeding Protocol: While some dives involve a controlled ‘baiting’ or feeding element to attract the sharks consistently, a responsible operator adheres to strict, minimal, and environmentally sound protocols. They should explain their methods beforehand through a clear and educational shark safety briefing prior to the dive that also has both a focus on conservation and education, not sensationalism.

Conservation Commitment: A top-tier dive center actively participates in shark research, identification programs (like Photo ID-ing now 300 individuals), and local conservation efforts. They view the sharks as a natural resource to be protected, not merely an attraction.

3. Logistical Reliability and Support

Diving in Fuvahmulah’s unique, isolated environment demands superior logistics.

Local Knowledge: The best operators are intimately familiar with the daily fluctuations of the powerful, open-ocean currents. They know the optimal times and specific locations for the safest and most reliable encounters.

Customer Service: The center should offer comprehensive support, including airport transfers, comfortable accommodations, and clear pre-dive briefings that detail the safety rules and the unique geography of Fuvahmulah.

Ultimately, the success of your dive rests on choosing an ethical, highly experienced operator like Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah. As a 100% locally-owned, award-winning center with a stellar safety record, small guide-to-guest ratios, and a deep commitment to shark conservation, choosing them ensures you receive authentic, expert-led dives that transform fear into profound fascination, and support the long-term protection of these magnificent ocean guardians.

Fuvahmulah is one of the world’s most unique destinations, the rare gem where divers consistently meet tiger sharks in their natural environment. For many, this incredible first encounter happens on a standard scuba dive. But what if you could take a single breath and step directly into their silent world?

Tiger Shark Freediving in Fuvahmulah, A Distinct Private Encounter

Maldives freediving with tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah offers a uniquely raw, profoundly quiet, and deeply personal point of view. This isn’t meant to replace scuba diving; it’s an invitation to observe these magnificent apex predators and connect with them in one breath—without the noise or bubbles of gear. Whether you’re a seasoned scuba enthusiast, a strong snorkeler, or simply an adventurer eager to experience the magic of Fuvahmulah’s marine life, freediving is a perspective worth exploring.

Tiger Shark Encounters: Freediving vs. Scuba Diving

Both scuba diving and freediving offer special, yet fundamentally different, experiences with the tiger sharks.

Feature

Scuba Diving

Freediving (Single Breath)

Duration

Extended bottom time (45+ minutes)

Short, intense moments (20–40 seconds)

Experience

Ideal for long, calm observations; perfect for photography/videography.

Focuses on intimacy and immediate connection; a more meditative experience.

Sound

Regulator noise and air bubbles.

Profound silence.

When you’re scuba diving, you enjoy the luxury of time, allowing you to thoroughly study the sharks’ appearance, social behaviors, and interactions. It’s the perfect way to soak in their presence without worrying about breath-holding.

Freediving, however, is all about the intensity of the moment. Whether you duck beneath the surface or simply view them from the float line, the water feels fundamentally different. The comfortable silence is transformative. Many divers describe it as a more natural encounter, often noting that the sharks seem to approach closer out of curiosity.

The best part? You don’t have to choose. Scuba and freediving perfectly complement each other, offering two distinct and equally powerful windows into the lives of these incredible animals.

Do You Need a Certification to Freedive with Tiger Sharks in Fuvahmulah?

“Do I need a freediving certification to swim with tiger sharks at Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah?” This is, hands-down, our most common question.

The answer is simple: No certification is required.

While formal training is certainly beneficial, it’s not a prerequisite for joining a freedive trip with Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah. What truly matters is your comfort and confidence in the water.

If you’re already at ease snorkeling, performing a basic duck-dive, or swimming in open ocean conditions, you are most likely ready to experience Fuvahmulah freediving with tiger sharks. If you’re brand new to open water, our expert guides will work with you carefully, building your comfort and confidence step-by-step.

Safety First: Our Priority When Fuvahmulah Freediving with Apex Predators

At Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, safety is non-negotiable. While our encounters with tiger sharks are consistently calm and controlled, freediving with large predators demands respect and awareness. Our team of local guides have years of combined experience leading guests in both scuba and freediving environments, and we provide a mandatory, thorough safety briefing before you ever enter the water.

Key aspects of our Maldives freediving safety protocol include:

Expert Guidance: You will always enter the water with professional guides who deeply understand shark behavior and know exactly how to position you safely.

Surface Support: Our dedicated safety boat and team are always present. You’ll be attached to a safety buoy, ensuring you can rest comfortably and securely between dives.

Shark Awareness: We coach you on how to remain calm, avoid quick or erratic movements, and ensure the sharks have their space while you enjoy the incredible encounter.

Dedicated Buddy System: You’re never alone. Every freedive is conducted with awareness under the constant, watchful eyes of our expert Pelagic Divers guides.

Our goal is to ensure a safe, natural, and awe-inspiring connection with these animals.

What to Expect When Fuvamulah Tiger Shark Freediving

Every single freedive with us begins with a detailed briefing covering the dive plan, reviewing shark behavior, and making sure everyone feels fully confident before we head out.

Once we arrive at the dive site, you’ll enter the water gently from the boat. The first few minutes are spent floating on the surface, observing the magnificent tiger sharks from above. When the guide signals readiness, we begin the dives.

The sensation is truly unique—the water presses gently around you, your heartbeat naturally slows, and the tiger sharks glide past with calm, steady movements. Each breath-hold dive might last only 20 to 40 seconds, but in that fleeting time, you experience an intensity and intimacy that is impossible to articulate.

Between dives, you rest comfortably at the surface, holding your float line, catching your breath, and watching the sharks until you’re ready to descend again. There is no rush, no pressure—just a natural rhythm between you, your breath, and the vast ocean.

The Power of Silence: Why Maldives Freediving with Tiger Sharks Changes Your Perspective

One of the most powerful elements of freediving is the silence. Without the hiss of regulators or the distracting trail of bubbles, you temporarily become another creature in the ocean, rather than a noisy visitor weighed down by equipment. Sharks often respond positively to this difference—sometimes approaching closer, circling with greater curiosity, or simply lingering nearby.

Many of our guests describe the experience as deeply meditative. It’s just you and your breath, forcing you to release stress and focus entirely on the present moment. That absolute presence allows you to connect with the tiger sharks in a way that feels profoundly personal, almost spiritual.

Fuvahmulah freediving with tiger sharks isn’t just about meeting the animals; it’s about discovering your own ability to be calm, centered, and fully in tune with the ocean’s rhythm.

Who Should Try Freediving with Tiger Sharks in Fuvahmulah?

This unique experience is open to a wide range of ocean-lovers, from seasoned scuba divers to confident snorkelers who have never worn a tank. Fuvahmulah freediving with tiger sharks is ideal for:

Non-Divers: If you don’t have your scuba certification but are eager to experience tiger sharks up close, freediving is your perfect gateway.

Certified Scuba Divers: If you’re already certified, freediving offers a fresh, complementary, and intimate way to connect with the same animals you love.

Ocean Enthusiasts: Strong swimmers, snorkelers, or anyone who feels comfortable and relaxed in open water will find this an immensely rewarding challenge.

Adventurers: If you crave a new perspective and memories that defy the ordinary, freediving in Fuvahmulah will deliver.

The key ingredient, again, is simply comfort in the water. If you feel calm floating at the surface and are open to trusting and learning from our guides, you are ready.

Preparing for Your Unforgettable Maldives Freediving Trip

You absolutely don’t need to be a professional athlete to freedive, but a little simple preparation will significantly enhance your experience:

Practice Relaxation: Freediving is fundamentally more about calmness than raw strength. Practicing slow, focused breathing will help you conserve oxygen and relax deeper into the dive.

Build Water Comfort: Spend time swimming, snorkeling, or casually duck-diving before your trip to build muscle memory and confidence.

Prioritize Wellness: A rested, well-hydrated body performs far better in the water. Get good sleep and drink plenty of water leading up to your trip.

Trust Your Guides: Our Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah team will coach you every single step of the way—trust their advice, follow their instructions, and most importantly, enjoy the moment.

A Memory That Stays With You

Whether it’s your first breath-hold or your hundredth, there’s a powerful, unforgettable magic about meeting our Fuvahmulah tiger sharks on a single breath. The silence, the closeness, the sheer natural intimacy of the moment leaves an imprint that lasts long after you’ve climbed back onto the boat.

At Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, we are dedicated to creating experiences that go far beyond the ordinary. Fuvahmulah freediving with tiger sharks isn’t about simply chasing a thrill; it’s about forming a profound connection—with the ocean, with these magnificent sharks, and with the calm within yourself.

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to truly share the water with one of the ocean’s most iconic predators without the barrier of equipment, this quiet, intimate style of diving may be the essential shift in perspective you’ve been searching for.

Capturing Memorable Moments With Fuvahmulah Photoshoots

Here at Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah one of our main objectives is to help the guests have a unique and exhilarating experience during their time spent here in the beautiful Fuvahmulah waters. In order to fulfill this objective, part of our services include helping divers capture their time underwater. We have a talented team of two who work tirelessly and strive to provide guests the finest photos and videos to keep as precious mementos.

Meet The Creatives Behind The Lens

Capturing the magic of above and beyond the waters, our resident Fuvahmulah photographer and videographer Mohammed Saarim Abdullah as well as Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah’s founder, Ahmed Inah, have guests in awe of their remarkable captures. In addition to the unforgettable dive experience, they are also ready with a camera in hand to take photos and videos for anyone who wishes to document their experience. Here, they provide an insight to their Fuvahmulah photoshoots and creative process. They each bear a unique approach as well as a keen eye for storytelling.

Inah – Real Time Storytelling Through The Lens

Inah chooses to use top-tier equipment to ensure every moment is captured with clarity and emotion. He shoots with the Sony Alpha 1, paired with 16 – 35mm and 50mm lenses. As for his underwater photoshoot in Fuvahmulah, he relies on a Red Gemini enclosed in a Gates housing. This gear is perfect for low-light conditions and natural, honest video work.

Inah does not subscribe to a particular photography style. Instead, he lets the moment dictate the image. His focus is on capturing authentic, cinematic action, using the lighting and environment to shape each frame. For scuba diving in Fuvahmulah sessions, he often prefers quieter settings. A serene dive allows him to shoot close to the subjects and stay away from crowds. In turn, this permits him to focus on the time the guests spent with the magnificent creatures. Apart from letting guests choose a certain photography style, Inah also shares his suggestions for various positions and camera angles. As a result, his shark photography in Fuvahmulah appears splendid and has received recognition and high praise from guests.

When it comes to photo editing, Inah uses DaVinci Resolve, prioritizing cinematic quality and storytelling. He shares finished work to our guests via Google Drive, making it easy for guests to access and download their memories. His advice to aspiring underwater photographers? “Be a good diver- it is not about the camera”.

Saarim – Adaptability Meets Creativity

Saarim brings versatility to the table, shooting with the Sony A7 IV, a trusted camera for dynamic and diverse content. He categorizes his style as a little bit of everything. In order to do so, he adapts based on the client, the location, and the story that is unfolding in real time.

He emphasises reading the situation and understanding the layout of what he is shooting. Whether it is land photography or underwater photoshoots in Fuvahmulah, Saarim focuses on making the subjects feel at ease, capturing the best version of the moment. Spontaneity coupled with candid captures allows him to produce incredible photographs. Moreover, Saarim does not only specialise in underwater photoshoots in Fuvahmulah. On top of that, he takes photos of special events, nature landscapes, event coverages and many others. A hobby that has developed into professional work, Saarim is now recognised for his splendid Fuvahmulah photoshoot projects.

His editing process includes a mix of Lightroom, Photoshop, and DaVinci, allowing him to fine-tune lighting, colour, and detail with expert precision. His creative philosophy centers on mastering the basics of light, composition, and storytelling as they are the foundations of what makes a good photo.

Shark Photography In Fuvahmulah

Both Inah and Saarim offer sessions for shark photography in Fuvahmulah. Each session is on average about 45 minutes and all footage that is captured and meets their quality control is provided to the guests. In the event that diving conditions are not favourable due to visibility, the underwater photoshoot session will be rescheduled.

Embracing Change: Why Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah Switched to SSI Certification

In 2020, a deep passion for the craft led to the creation of Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, a 100% locally-owned dive center in the Maldives. Our all-Maldivian team of dive guides and instructors is certified by SSI. Our primary focus is quality dives, with a guide-to-guest ratio of 1:4 and a maximum of 12 guests on our dive boat—ensuring a safer, more personal experience.

As a close-knit diving family with over 40 years of collective experience, we build strong bonds with guests. Many love the experience so much they return yearly! When you dive in the Maldives with locals, you arrive as strangers but leave as family. Experience sharks the way only marine-loving locals can show you.

What Is SSI?

Founded in 1970, Scuba Schools International (SSI) aims to make diving accessible and safe. Today, the industry recognizes SSI as the world’s largest professional training agency, with 3,500+ centers and 100,000+ professionals across 150+ countries.

For 50+ years, SSI has offered top-tier programs in Recreational Scuba, Freediving, Mermaid, and more—from Beginner to Instructor Trainer levels. Their materials are available in 40+ languages at SSI centers worldwide, empowering people to explore the underwater world.

A pioneer in the field, SSI is a founding member of the Recreational Scuba Training Council (RSTC) and ISO-certified. They actively shape global safety standards, making SSI certifications universally trusted.

Why We Chose SSI

In 2024, we transitioned to SSI to align with our values of quality and safety. SSI requires instructors to renew licenses annually, including medical evaluations—ensuring our team is professionally active, healthy, and fit. This directly enhances dive safety and quality.

Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner, our team’s annual training and health checks guarantee you’re in the safest hands. Dive worry-free in Fuvahmulah’s waters with our dedicated professionals.

Dive with SSI-Certified Professionals at Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah

Our shift to SSI reflects our commitment to excellence. With rigorous renewals, our team maintains peak competence and safety standards. Whether exploring Fuvahmulah’s waters for the first time or the hundredth, our SSI-certified guides ensure an unforgettable experience.

Diving in Fuvahmulah – Reasons to Dive with Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah

Since Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah began operations in February 2020, the team has operated under the tagline “Dive With Locals”. Ahmed Inah, the founder, continues to strongly believe in the principles and benefits of supporting the local community. We are proudly 100% Maldivian owned and the entire dive guide team are all local dive masters and instructors.

What Makes Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah Stand Out

Diving with Locals

Currently, Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah has seven permanent dive guides – four instructors and three dive masters. Specifically, during the peak season for diving in Fuvahmulah, the dive center engages with highly experienced Maldivian dive guides for support. On top of that, these local guides have been diving in Fuvahmulah regularly with the dive center. Moreover, this also reinforces their familiarity with the diving safety standards that Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah apply.

Our Team – Certified and Active Dive Professionals

Every member of the dive team holds high qualifications and actively works as a dive master or instructor. Their credentials can be verified as per the SSI system. It gives our divers peace of mind regarding the professionalism and legitimacy of their dive guides. Active professionals submit annual medical checks to renew their membership, in accordance with SSI standards. Our guests are assured that our dive team members are healthy to lead scuba diving in Fuvahmulah as necessary.

Each dive team member trains as a shark safety diver, enhancing the measures we take to provide a safe and secure diving environment. Inah and the dive team, received training from Ocean Ramsey and Juan Oliphant. Chiefly, they are founders of One Ocean Diving and have been experts in conservation projects since 2010. They were heavily keen on the Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah vision from the onset and have provided support on many occasions. Furthermore, Inah requires the dive guide to spend at least a year diving in Fuvahmulah with tiger sharks. After a year’s training and approval by Inah, the dive guide is finally able to lead a dive or position themselves at the center of the dive site — Tiger Harbour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if the guides I’m diving with are licensed?

A great way to know if the guides you’re diving with are licensed, is to ask as many questions needed to your chosen dive center. A responsible & reputable dive center will be more than willing to share valid licenses and dive certifications of their dive team.

What makes a safe diving experience?

For a safe diving experience, one of the key points is the guide to diver ratio. The lower the ratio, the better and safer diving experience for you. The other important key point is the dive certification of your dive guides and the dive experience. To be able to lead divers on a dive, a dive guide needs to have a minimum of a Dive Master certification and of course the longer the guide has been a professional diver, the safer the experience for the guest.

Why is it important to choose the right dive center?

It is important to choose the right dive center because scuba diving itself is an extreme sport. In order to minimize more risks of scuba diving, a right dive center is able to operate and manage safe dives. Mitigating safe dives is based upon having valid licenses and dive certifications, as well as dive skills, techniques and experience.

Momma Tiger Shark Project in Fuvahmulah

Beneath the deep blue waters of Fuvahmulah’s Tiger Harbor hides an amazing discovery: a safe haven where powerful tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) reveal their gentler side. For up to 16 months, female tiger sharks carry their babies within them, turning their strong bodies into living nurseries in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. This incredibly long pregnancy remained mostly unknown until local dive guides started noticing unusual patterns they couldn’t ignore. It struck our curiosity.

Tiger Harbor wasn’t just a place where sharks came to feed or pass through, but something much more special: a pregnancy sanctuary where these impressive creatures gather during their most vulnerable time. It sparked a variety of questions, like: What makes these magnificent sharks choose these particular waters? What ancient instinct guides them to this specific Maldivian island?

Simple curiosity grew into a passionate pursuit in May 2024. Our researchers began an innovative project where we partnered with a competitor dive center to investigate tiger shark pregnancy patterns in Fuvahmulah. The initiative leveraged the expertise of the marine biologists from our two different dive centers, who collaborated together to ultrasonically examine free-swimming sharks. This effort built upon previous work dating back to 2016/2017, during which our teams had been meticulously identifying and photographing individual tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah’s waters.

The primary goal of the project, fondly referred to as the ‘Momma Tiger Project’, was to obtain concrete scientific evidence of pregnancy among the tiger sharks frequenting the island’s waters. The research team was particularly interested in determining how many pregnant sharks were present around the island, regardless of their gestation stage.

Intrigued to learn what we discovered? Read on.

Key Findings of the Momma Tiger Project

The research was conducted by a team led by James A. Sulikowski from Oregon State University, in collaboration with several NGOs including Fuvahmulah Dream, Miyaru Shark Programme, and Nature Friends of Maldives. Fieldwork and previous tiger shark identification data were provided to the team by Fuvahmulah Dive School and Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah.

Researchers deployed a high-definition submersible ultrasound called an IBEX Aquanaut with a 60mm curved transducer to scan sharks as they swam by, capturing images of developing embryos inside the mothers as they swam freely through the waters of Tiger Harbor. The results were remarkable, revealing that an overwhelming 93% of the adult female sharks were pregnant examined — 26 out of the 28 scanned.

Interestingly, the team identified two distinct groups of embryos within these mother sharks: one group with embryos averaging just 8.0 cm in total length, and another with significantly larger embryos measuring about 18.4 cm. This size difference suggests either staggered breeding periods or varying growth rates among developing shark pups.

Adding to the intrigue of this discovery was the complete absence of male tiger sharks throughout the entire study period, which ran from May 2 to May 12, 2024, further supporting the theory that this location serves as a specialized sanctuary for pregnant females.

Significance of Our Pregnant Tiger Sharks Project

The unprecedented pregnancy rate documented at Tiger Harbor — the highest ever recorded for tiger sharks! — provides compelling evidence that this site functions specifically as a dedicated gestation ground. This discovery challenges existing scientific understanding of tiger shark reproduction, suggesting these magnificent predators may reproduce on a biennial or possibly even annual cycle, rather than the previously accepted triennial pattern.

Environmental factors also likely play a crucial role in this reproductive haven. The consistently warm, calm waters of Tiger Harbor may create ideal conditions that accelerate embryonic development, potentially shortening the typically lengthy gestation period of tiger sharks (which is 13-16 months). Additionally, the location offers practical advantages for pregnant females, with the nearby tuna fishery providing a consistent, low-effort food source — a significant benefit for sharks carrying developing young. Together, these factors create a perfect nursery environment that explains why so many pregnant tiger sharks congregate in this specific location.

Conservation Efforts Moving Forward

This research shows how important dive tourism is for learning about sharks. Divers and researchers working together at Fuvahmulah discovered things about shark reproduction that scientists might never have found otherwise. The timing of this discovery is crucial because there were plans to allow commercial fishing with long-lines in Maldivian waters. These fishing methods could seriously harm any tiger shark nursery that could potentially be in nearby waters.

To protect these pregnant sharks, the researchers strongly advocate for a complete ban on fishing in this area year-round. Pregnant tiger sharks are especially vulnerable during this time and need this protection. This study also shows how innovative technologies like underwater ultrasound can help us learn about sharks without hurting them. Instead of catching or killing sharks to study them, researchers can now gather important information while leaving the sharks unharmed in their natural habitat. This approach could change how we study and protect not just sharks, but many other marine species worldwide.

SAMPA – Protecting Whale Sharks in the Maldives

Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are the largest known living fish. Harmless in nature, massive in physique, these slow-moving giants have been discovered to grow to the lengths of 18.8m (61.7 ft). They inhabit the open waters of all tropical oceans, very rarely being found in water below 21 °C (70 °F). Based on studies of their vertebral growth bands, it is estimated that they can live between 80 to 130 years. With very large mouths and long lives, it’s fortunate that whale sharks are filter feeders, meaning they survive almost exclusively on plankton and other small fishes. They do not pose any threat to humans. In fact, it might be the other way around, which is where the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) comes into play.

SAMPA – How Whale Sharks in Maldives Are Protected

The government established the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) under a protection decree that took effect on June 5, 2009, setting its boundaries 1 km seaward from reef crests. It is classified as a Category 7 under the Protected Area Regulation, meaning it is a protected area with sustainable use. The purpose of this decree is to ensure the long-term conservation of ecologically significant natural resources in the area, particularly the protection of whale sharks in Maldives and their natural habitat. According to the IUCN Redlist whale sharks are assessed to be ‘endangered’, with their population largely depleted.

SAMPA holds the title of the largest protected area in the Maldives, making it one of the world’s most significant sites for whale sharks. Whale sharks remain present in SAMPA year-round, and researchers have recorded sightings of more than 726 individual whale sharks within the Marine Protected Area (MPA) to date, with over 8,000 encounters. Many of these whale sharks return frequently to the area.

Most sightings in the areas are male juveniles (72.5%). This makes it probable that this area has the highest re-sighting rate of individual whale sharks in the world. SAMPA is likely a ‘secondary nursery’ location for whale sharks which have grown above the juvenile period. In addition, whale sharks in this region are not seen again once they grow beyond 8m, corresponding to sexual maturity. It therefore appears SAMPA offers a critical habitat in this post-juvenile-pre-mature stage.

Interacting With Whale Sharks Under SAMPA

The South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) has established specific and detailed guidelines for interactions with whale sharks in Maldives to protect these endangered species while allowing for sustainable tourism. These rules include:

Distance Requirements

Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters from the head or body of the whale shark

Stay at least 4 meters away from the whale shark’s tail

If encountering a whale shark from below, maintain a distance of at least 20 meters to allow the shark to swim upward for thermoregulation

When a whale shark approaches within 15 meters of a vessel, all engines must be put in neutral until the shark moves more than 15 meters away

Behavioral Rules

Strictly prohibited to touch or ride on a whale shark under any circumstance

No deliberate crossing in front of the whale shark’s direction of travel

No impeding the whale shark’s movement

Approach slowly and from the sides so the whale shark can see you approaching

No chasing after whale sharks – allow them to move freely

Environmental Considerations

No flash photography or use of lights near whale sharks’ heads as they are sensitive to light

No feeding of whale sharks as this disrupts their natural filter feeding behavior

Activities should be conducted as quietly as possible – avoid aggressive flapping motions and loud movements

No use of motorized or powered swimming/diving aids in contact zones

When entering water from boats, do so quietly to avoid disturbing the sharks

Time and Group Management

Snorkeling and free diving activities can only be carried from 6 AM to 6 PM

Each group limited to 15 minutes of interaction time when other vessels are waiting

Maximum of 60 persons total (including guides) allowed in water from contact vessels

Guide-to-visitor ratio maintained at 1:6

No more than 6 vessels (including ranger vessels) allowed in a 250-meter “contact zone” around a whale shark

SAMPA designed these rules to minimize stress on whale sharks in the Maldives while still providing meaningful experiences for visitors. SAMPA Rangers and Guardians enforce these rules to help the whale shark population recover and move away from endangered status.
