Tiger Shark Overview

The Galeocerdo cuvier or commonly known as the tiger shark, is the second-largest predatory shark after the Great White Shark. They get their name from their distinctive grey vertical stripes that are more evident in juveniles. The magnificent tiger shark can grow anywhere between 10 to 14 feet and weigh between 850 to 1400 pounds. Tiger sharks are most commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical waters around the world. In Fuvahmulah, our team of natives take divers to Tiger Harbour on a daily basis to get a close up look at them.

The Tiger Shark is an amazing creature. These magnificent swimmers have excellent senses of both sight and smell. Their sharp teeth along with powerful jaws have the ability to crack the shells of both sea turtles and clams. It is important to respect them when we are visiting their territory. After all, isn’t that what you do when you visit someone’s home? That’s why we highly advise future divers to pay close attention to the rules and details outlined in the Tiger Shark Specialty Course that Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah offers.

Tiger Sharks like many other sharks are heavily harvested for their fins, skin and flesh. Currently, the Tiger Shark’s population status is “near threatened”. This is incredibly alarming as Tiger Shark has an extremely low population rate and is highly susceptible to overfishing. At Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, we share the importance of respecting the marine life we see on our dives and how to best scuba dive with sharks so that no harm comes their way and all parties involved are safe.
