Tiger Shark Diving Fuvahmulah

One of the many reasons divers have an amazing dive experience is the opportunity to encounter various pelagic species. Safe and responsible interactions with these marine life creates everlasting memories. Not only that but it also develops a better understanding of these magnificent creatures too.

Fuvahmulah has been gaining popularity as the place for tiger shark diving. The island is home to one of the healthiest populations of tiger sharks, with researchers identifying over 240 individuals. Tiger shark diving in Fuvahmulah is safe in general. However, we are also diving into their environment and territory. It is important to realize that every activity carries some risk, including diving. Tiger sharks, as apex predators, are naturally curious, so divers must always respect them in their domain.

Trained Tiger Shark Diving Fuvahmulah Team

First and foremost, all our dive guides hold a minimum certification of dive masters. Professional shark safety experts, Ocean Ramsey & Juan Oliphant of One Ocean Diving, have trained both our instructors and dive guides. Our team reads, identifies, and monitors each shark’s behaviour during each dive. Keeping this in mind, the team developed signals to communicate with each other and the boat crew on the surface. That way the team stays ready to take precautionary measures if needed.

Fuvahmulah Shark Diving Safety Procedures and Protocols

Our team follows a set of shark diving safety procedures based on our collective dive experience and principles.

We require all divers, regardless of certification, to do a check dive as their first dive with us.

We require divers to be certified before permitting them to join a tiger shark dive.

Dives are a maximum of 12 divers per boat.

We dive with a ratio of 1 guide to 4 divers. Should there be less than 12 divers per boat, we still maintain a minimum of 3 dive guides.

Prior a diver’s first tiger shark dive, it is mandatory to go through our in-depth tiger shark safety diving briefing.

The tiger shark safety briefing covers topics such as:

History of tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah

Co-existence of tiger sharks with the local community and fishermen

Dive plan

What to expect from the tiger sharks

Tiger sharks’ behaviour

How divers should behave – do’s and don’ts

Resident tiger sharks and other marine life

Emergency protocols

Conservation efforts

Dive guides will cancel a tiger shark dive if they find that the sea conditions or water visibility are not optimal or if the tiger sharks’ behavior is more agitated than normal.

After a diver’s first tiger shark dive with us, we conduct a debrief to discuss the sharks’ behavior and the diver’s actions. We also highlight any issues or areas for improvement for the next dive.

If a diver ignores instructions or continuous reminders on how to behave during a tiger shark dive, our guides will disqualify them from further participation in tiger shark dives.

If a diver disregards instructions from our guides and jeopardizes the safety of other divers, our guides will immediately end the tiger shark dive.

It is mandatory that all our guides carry a tourniquet with them during all dives. We have trained all our guides on how to handle emergency situations.

Briefing on Tiger Shark Dive Plan

Prior to each tiger shark dive, our guides conduct a dive plan briefing on the boat. We share a step-by-step process with divers to ensure everyone is clear and understands how the dives will proceed.

The dive plan:

Although Tiger Harbour lies at the mouth of the harbour, divers will jump into the water at the reef next to the harbour, not the main dive site, for safety reasons.

Upon reaching the dive site, our dive guides will check the water for any nearby sharks from the boat.

The first person that will jump into the water will be the dive guide.

Tiger shark dive is done with a negative entry dive as we do not want divers staying at the surface that may cause splashing and noise, mimicking an injured prey, which may attract tiger sharks.

Once all the divers are in the water, the group will move as a whole to the main dive site.

During this time, there will be one lead guide ahead of the group, minimum one guide in the middle, and minimum one guide at the end.

We arrange divers in a row at a designated area, where at least two guides stay with them.

The lead guide will then move to the middle of the dive site in order to signal the boat crew to drop the fish heads.

After the allocated tiger shark dive time has ended, the lead guide will signal to end the dive and indicate the direction that divers need to move to.

Again, there will be one lead guide ahead, minimum one guide in the middle, and minimum one guide at the end to head back to the reef to do the safety stop.

Once the safety stop is completed, divers will follow two guides to the surface and back onto the boat. One guide will remain at six meters to ensure sharks do not approach from below. This guide will be the last to exit the water.

Allocated Tiger Shark Dive Times

To make certain that Tiger Harbour is not overcrowded and safety compromised, every dive center is allocated a specific 30-minute time slot each day. It is important that divers are on time for tiger shark dives and respect each dive center’s scheduled timings. Divers are informed in advance of timings to be on the boat for tiger shark dives. Should divers be late, the dive will proceed without them.

Tiger Shark Safety Diver Course

We strive to not only provide the best shark diving experience but also an educational one. Divers bring home not only great shark diving memories but also a better knowledge about sharks and our marine life. We strongly advocate that the more we are able to share knowledge about sharks, the better we are able to understand these highly misunderstood apex predators.

With these reasons, Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah has created a tiger shark speciality dive course and has been offering this since November 2022. The course is for Advanced Open Water and above certified divers that are interested in learning more about diving safely with tiger sharks. The course allows our instructors to share and educate divers on the details of Fuvahmulah tiger shark behaviour, identify resident tiger sharks, how to observe and interact safely and sustainably with the tiger sharks.

Education and Awareness of Tiger Sharks

It is always the unknown that causes fear and misconceptions. We strongly believe that the more we are able to share and expand our knowledge, the deeper an understanding we will have.

As such, we have a marine biologist as part of our team that is tasked in collecting data of the tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah and to expand the current tiger shark identification project. To date, we have collectively identified just over 240 individuals from one dive site. We have also deployed new non-intrusive techniques to identify tiger sharks to observe their individual behaviour. As a result, we are learning more about our resident tiger sharks and are even more attuned to when they have a change in their ways.

We host a weekly tiger shark presentation that is open to anyone on the island. The objective of this is to provide a space for us and guests to share more about tiger sharks. The presentation is conducted by our marine biologist which provides guests an opportunity to share or ask questions that they may have about sharks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Fuvahmulah tiger shark diving safe?

In general, Fuvahmulah tiger shark diving is safe. As with any scuba diving, each dive has its own risk. Divers need to remember to always follow the instructions for the dive guides above and in the water. It is also important to always respect the environment and the marine life that you are diving with, especially with sharks.

Have there been shark attacks in Fuvahmulah?

There have not been any shark attacks in Fuvahmulah. We follow a strict list of shark diving safety procedures to ensure a safe dive as possible.

Can anyone go and dive with tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah?

We only take certified divers to scuba dive with tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah. If a non-certified diver is interested in doing a tiger shark dive with us, we are able to first do an Open Water course with them. After successfully completing the course, we will then take the diver for tiger shark dives.

Do you hand feed the tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah?

We do not hand feed tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah. However, the dives are baited, but it is important to note that this practice has been done for generations of fishermen in Fuvahmulah. Prior to the construction of the harbour and fish market, fishermen used to clean their catch of the day and discard any fish parts into the water. Tiger sharks knew to gather around these fishing boats to then eat these fish wastes.

Snorkeling in Maldives Coral Reefs

If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind snorkeling experience, then you have to travel to Fuvahmulah. Fuvahmulah is an island in the south of Maldives and has some of the world’s most breathtaking coral reefs. Snorkeling in Maldives allows divers to experience the diverse marine life that call Fuvahmulah’s coral reef their home. Let’s “dive” into one of the most popular coral reef sites in the world.

Coral Reef Overview

Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems that support various species and biodiversity. These stunning environments are mostly found in tropical and subtropical waters. Often called the “rainforests of the seas,” coral reefs provide a significant fraction of Earth’s biodiversity. Despite covering less than 0.1% of the planet’s surface, they are the most biodiverse marine ecosystems in the world.

Coral reefs are home to 4,000 species of reef fish, 840 species of corals, and over 1 million species of other marine life. A fun fact is that they support over 25% of all marine life. Each species plays a crucial role in keeping the ecosystem healthy and intact. Snorkeling or diving in Maldives offers an opportunity to see these incredible species in their natural habitat.

Fuvahmulah’s Coral Reef

Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah conducted a baseline research on the coral reefs surrounding the island in December 2021. The research found that Fuvahmulah’s East reef has 41% mean live coral coverage, while the West reef has 64.1%. These percentages are significantly higher than the Maldives’ national average of 19.2%, according to the IUCN report.

Importance of Coral Reef Preservation

Global warming and climate change have significantly impacted coral reefs worldwide. These ecosystems are crucial in mitigating climate change effects. Studies suggest that by 2050, all coral reefs will be under threat if no action is taken. By 2055, 90% of global reefs may experience severe bleaching.

Coral reefs provide livelihoods for millions of people, including those involved in Maldives’ tourism sector, which benefits from snorkeling and diving activities.

Coral reefs protect 200 million people from storm surges and waves.

Over 500 million people depend on coral reefs for food, income, and coastal protection.

Coral reefs contribute over $375 billion annually in goods and services.

Marine organisms from coral reefs play a significant role in medical research.

More than half of all new cancer drug research involves marine organisms.

Conclusion

It is essential to appreciate and protect these incredible underwater ecosystems. Snorkeling in Maldives offers a chance to witness their beauty firsthand. Come explore Fuvahmulah’s stunning coral reefs and experience marine life like never before.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to places on earth that offer the ultimate shark diving experience, few can compete against the Maldives. Fuvahmulah is a hotspot for you to enjoy the one-of-a-kind Maldives shark dive. From diving with the majestic whale shark to free diving with the impressive tiger sharks, Fuvahmulah is a shark haven. If you are looking to swim with these magnificent pelagics, then our Maldives shark dives are an adventure for you!

About Tiger Sharks

In the spotlight for our Maldives shark dive experience is the one and only tiger shark. Scientifically known as the Galeocerdo cuvier, these apex predators can range anywhere between 10 to 14 feet and weigh between 850 to 1,400 pounds. A little fun fact about tiger sharks is that the females tend to be larger than the male species!

Named for their dark, vertical stripes, the tiger shark is one of the most misunderstood shark species. Unfortunately, they gained a negative reputation due to the movie industry. An interesting fact about the vertical stripes is that as the sharks grow older, the stripes tend to fade. You will get to see them in all shapes and sizes with our latest Maldives shark dive.

Tiger Shark Diet

When it comes to the diet of the tiger shark, there really is no set menu. From eating sea snakes, turtles, whales and even smaller sharks, they will eat whatever they can get their “fins” on. They even eat man-made objects as these items were found in their stomachs.

Their powerful jaws allow them to slice through their prey with a surplus of new teeth ready to replace the worn-out ones. Their teeth are sharp and highly serrated, they can crack open the likes of sea turtle shells and clams.

Tiger Shark Behavior

For you to truly enjoy a Maldives shark dive, you have to understand more about the tiger shark. Tiger sharks tend to be drawn to warm waters and are found in tropical, subtropical and peri-equatorial regions. Tiger sharks tend to prefer deeper waters but occasionally make their way to shallow water, especially in the search of prey.

The tiger shark is an excellent scavenger, as they possess an excellent sense of smell. Tiger sharks tend to hunt at night, as their special sensors and their eyesight excel at low-light intensity. They also tend to hunt individually however, we are yet to know if they are the social type.

It is essential that divers learn and respect the behaviour of tiger sharks. This will help in experiencing the ultimate Maldives shark dive that is both safe and respectful.

Where To Find Tiger Sharks in Fuvahmulah

You are not short of spots to enjoy a Maldives shark dive. Fuvahmulah has great spots for diving with tiger sharks. One of the most popular area is Tiger Harbour, which is on the Eastern side of Fuvahmulah. This area is the hotspot for tiger shark diving in Fuvahmulah. Other popular sites for Maldives shark dive include Farikede on the Southern part of the island as well as Seafan, which is North of Fuvahmulah.

How To Treat and Live with Tiger Sharks

While tiger sharks are apex predators, an attack on humans are relatively rare. The sad reality is that tiger sharks are a near-threatened species. This means that they are likely to be endangered in the next decades. Tiger sharks like many other sharks are hunted for their fins, flesh, skin and liver, which contains high levels of vitamin A. The fishing for sharks have drastically impacted the population numbers. This is a huge issue considering they have an extremely low population rate.

To enjoy a Maldives shark dive with these amazing apex predators, you have to learn to share the waters. Do not threaten them and treat tiger sharks with respect and remember that you are in their territory.

We offer a unique Maldives shark dive package allowing you to explore the waters in Fuvahmulah with these magnificent creatures. Our Speciality Course – Fuvahmulah Tiger Shark Diver, shares how to dive respectfully and sustainably by understanding tiger shark behaviour, species and conservation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Maldives shark dives safe?

In general Maldive shark dives are safe. However, it is important to highlight that as with all activities there is a risk involved because we are entering the sharks’ environment and territory. Divers need to remember to always be respectful of the sharks and if divers do decide to dive the tiger sharks or any other sharks, to dive with professionally trained shark safety divers.

Can I dive with tiger sharks if I do not have scuba diving experience?

No, you will not be able to dive with tiger sharks if you do not have scuba diving experience and are not a certified diver. Divers need to be a minimum Open Water certified to dive with tiger sharks.

Do you hand feed tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah when going for Maldives shark dives?

No, we do not hand feed tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah when going for Maldives shark dives. Our tiger shark dives in Fuvahmulah are baited dives but this practice of providing tuna fish parts to tiger sharks is not something new. Generations of Fuvahmulah fishermen have been discarding tuna and other fish wastes back into the ocean after cleaning their catch of the day. Tiger sharks being opportunistic predators have always followed these fishing boats, waiting for fish to be caught on fishing lines or for fish wastes to be discarded.

Fuvahmulah Plastic Pollution

The other plastic pollution issue we are facing is the use of plastic straws in Fuvahmulah. As we aim to make Fuvahmulah a plastic straw free island, we thank @coolbananmv for being the first restaurant to eliminate the use of plastic straws.

Another serious plastic pollution that needs addressing is the incessant use of plastic shopping bags. These plastics take nearly 1000 years to break down. Unfortunately, these do not completely degrade but break down into micro plastics. Micro plastics continue to pollute the environment as marine fish are dying from ingesting them. As this form of plastic pollution moves up the food chain, the toxicity increases, and eventually ends up on our plates. Micro plastics are now traceable in our blood stream as proven in a recent scientific research.

Through our non-profit organization, @naturefriendsofmaldives and partnerships, we aim to educate and normalize the use of reusable shopping bags. They are also available for sale at our Fuvahmulah dive centre. Proceeds from the sale of these reusable shopping bags will go towards our home water filter project.

Solution to Fuvahmulah Plastic Bottle Pollution

We are raising funds to purchase home RO water filters via our NGO Nature Friends of Maldives and partnerships with Ocean Ramsey and Juan Oliphant from One Ocean Diving, One Ocean Conservation and Save The Sea Turtles International. The installation of these water filters in households will eventually minimize the need for plastic water bottles.

However, the largest consumers of plastic water bottles are the restaurants and guesthouses. For a viable long-term solution, we are in plans to build an industrial water filtering and bottling plant. This water plant will eliminate the need for these businesses to purchase single-use plastic water bottles.

The glass bottles will have the branding of each participating restaurant and guesthouse. Each glass water bottle will also include a Say No To Plastic message to raise awareness. Restaurants and guesthouses need only exchange their empty glass bottles with filled ones. The water plant will be responsible for sterilizing, refilling, and delivering these glass bottles.

Maldives Plastic Pollution

Fuvahmulah discards over 2.4 million plastic water bottles at the landfill annually. Unfortunately, plastics take at least 450 years to completely degrade. As the plastics breakdown into micro plastics, it for certainly makes it into our food source. It is now scientifically proven these micro plastics are consequently found in our bloodstream. The plastic wastes that are in the landfill are also leaching chemicals into the ground, eventually compromising our freshwater sources too.

At the present time, we are raising funds to purchase home RO water filters to reduce plastic water bottle consumption. We have partnered up with Ocean Ramsey and Juan Oliphant from One Ocean Diving, One Ocean Conservation and Save The Sea Turtles International, on this home water filter project. It is our goal over the next 2 years to have water filters in each Fuvahmulah household that will need one.

The installation of first 30 water filters that arrived in early 2022 went successfully. Families have shared they have since saved approximately US$100 per month for a household of 4 persons. This is equivalent to about 100 plastic water bottles per month.

Meanwhile, we have launched the second round of fundraising in early May 2022 with aims to raise US$100,000. This enables us to purchase and install about 400 water filters. To date, there are about 600 households, out of 2860, in Fuvahmulah that have water filters installed in their homes. We have since donated and installed, in mid-2023, another 60 units to lower income households in Fuvahmulah.

Watch our video on the water filter project and read more about our Water Filtering & Bottling Plant project.

Maldives Coral Reefs

Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah and @naturefriendsofmaldives took the decision to sponsor a private research of our Fuvahmulah diving sites. This is the first time conducting a research to survey the biodiversity of our corals and fish that we have. It is important to realize that we must have a greater understanding of our house coral reefs in Maldives. With better knowledge and data, it will allow us to best protect this diverse ecosystem and its inhabitants. We are now at least doing our part to understand and protect the marine life in our house coral reefs in Maldives.

Cherine @cherine.kai, Samantha @samantha.jhowlett and Gaius @gaius.timms from Orcestra, Switzerland, were on a 1.5 month long research trip. The team went on daily dives to collect data on the corals and fish found at Fuvahmulah diving sites. This tedious task finally allows us a clear map of our reef biodiversity. Results of this study will add to the status of Fuvahmulah being a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

We are hoping that our initiatives will encourage and inspire the local community and the local council. We need to take more sustainable measures in the hope that the treasures of our underwater world are preserved and protected.

Fuvahmulah, The Best of Maldives Scuba Diving

Fuvahmulah has many natural blessings. As a matter of fact, we are the only single island atoll in Maldives and known as Maldives shark island. Scuba diving in Maldives is always spectacular but Fuvahmulah diving sites are a pelagic haven. Due to the unique geography of Fuvahmulah, divers get the opportunity to potentially dive with seven types of rare sharks.

Renowned Tiger Shark Diving in Maldives

Tiger Harbour is the infamous shark diving site in Fuvahmulah. Sightings of tiger sharks are throughout the year and to date, there are over 200 identified individuals in Fuvahmulah. Tiger shark diving in Fuvahmulah is the only shark diving site that guarantees divers tiger shark encounters.

Divers have one of the best opportunities in the world to encounter thresher sharks when shark diving in Fuvahmulah. The cleaning stations in the shallow waters draw these elusive sharks that are usually in deeper waters.

In the right conditions, divers can watch in awe as schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks cruise the currents. These oddly shaped head sharks usually start to make an appearance in October and can sometimes last till April. The majestic whale sharks, also referred to as gentle giants of the ocean, often visit Fuvahmulah between January to May. The silver tip, grey reef and white tip sharks are some of the other shark species that complete this rich ecosystem.

Fuvahmulah Diving Sites

Alongside shark diving in Maldives, oceanic mantas passes Fuvahmulah island between March to May. Pelagic fish are huge schools of tuna, jack fish, barracudas, trevallies, rainbow runners and countless other marine life.

The island has some of the best dive sites in Maldives, including the house coral reef with over 100% coverage. Similarly, our baseline data research also shows that the coral reefs are healthy and stable. To illustrate the health of the reef, the research team found coral species that are on the edge of extinction.

Sustainability and Conservation

Evidently, due to its distinct island features, UNESCO had listed Fuvahmulah as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2020. Given these points, it is important to realize that environmental sustainability and conservation should be a priority. We should encourage a more sustainable living to protect our natural treasure – our island, oceans, coral reefs and marine life.

Our commitment to sustain, conserve and protect our oceans, coral reef and marine life, is one that we take seriously. We will continue fighting for a future where we are still able to experience amazing tiger shark diving in Maldives. Not only that but also to witness other majestic marine fauna and healthy coral reefs when experience Fuvahmulah diving.

Join us on our conservation journey with our non-profit organization @naturefriendsofmaldives, and in collaboration with @oneoceandiving @oceanramsey @juanshark

There are a few conservation efforts in Fuvahmulah that we have initiated – home water filter project, coral baseline data research, tiger shark ID and weekly tiger shark presentation.

The water filter project in Fuvahmulah is a project we started in early 2022. We raised funds and purchased 30 home mini RO water filters which have been installed in local homes. We organized a second fundraiser and have managed to raise enough funds to further purchase another 60 mini RO water filters to be installed in Fuvahmulah homes.

Tiger shark conservation efforts in Fuvahmulah started about 6 years ago with the tiger shark ID. Together with another dive center, we have identified 248 individual tiger sharks that frequent Tiger Harbour. We also hold a weekly presentation on tiger sharks that are open to anyone on the island to join and come learn and share more about these apex predators.
